Scalers & image processing

A scaler turns the analogue signal of a retro console into a picture a modern screen can display. This selection brings together the RetroScaler2x, which doubles the lines of an AV source, BitFunx converters to HDMI 1080p for the PS1, PS2, PC Engine and Dreamcast, and the expansion boards for the MiSTer FPGA.

Line doubler, HDMI converter and FPGA do not play the same role

Choose first according to the console's output

Each box is designed for one family of signals. The BitFunx PS2 and PS3 converter plugs into the original AV output and draws power over USB. The PC Engine model accepts RGB and outputs 1080p with a 16:9 or 4:3 switch. The Mini DC takes VGA from a Dreamcast, and another model handles both RGB and YPbPr from a PS1 or a PS2 at 1080p. The RetroScaler2x, for its part, works on a generic AV input, doubling the lines before the HDMI output.

Doubling the lines is not the same as scaling to 1080p

  • Line doubler: 240p becomes 480p, and the screen then finishes the enlargement its own way.
  • 1080p scaler: the box delivers a fixed resolution directly, which is more stable on a flat screen.
  • FPGA: a MiSTer board with 32 or 128 MB of SDRAM recreates the hardware; it does not convert an existing signal.

What it doesn't do

None of these boxes removes latency: conversion always adds a few milliseconds. Nor do they fix a blurry picture caused by a composite cable upstream, or a signal that is missing for want of an RGB mod. And the SDRAM and RTC boards are meant solely for the MiSTer FPGA on a DE10-Nano, not for an original console.

Questions fréquentes

What is the difference between the RetroScaler2x and a BitFunx converter?
The RetroScaler2x is a general-purpose line doubler: it takes an AV input, doubles the lines and outputs HDMI. The BitFunx boxes are dedicated to one specific machine, PS1 and PS2, PC Engine or Dreamcast, and output a fixed 1080p. The latter gives a more stable picture on a flat screen, the former accepts more sources.
What are the SDRAM and RTC boards for the MiSTer FPGA for?
The SDRAM board, available in 32 or 128 MB, adds the memory the most demanding MiSTer cores need on the DE10-Nano. The real-time clock board keeps the date and time when power is off, which saves re-entering them at every start-up. These are expansions, not video converters.
Does a scaler add latency to my games?
Yes, any conversion takes processing time, generally a few milliseconds. On platform or fighting games, this adds to the TV's own latency. Turning on the screen's Game mode is still the setting that makes the biggest difference, even before the choice of box.
