RGBS to HDMI converter: the Mega Drive and the Neo Geo on a recent screen
The Mega Drive and the Neo Geo AES output a good-quality RGB signal, but today's TVs no longer have an input to receive it. This converter takes the console's RGBS signal and scales it to 1080p HDMI, with a choice of 4:3 or 16:9 format.
What it does
- RGBS input: starts from the best signal these consoles can produce natively.
- 1080p HDMI output: scaling for recent TVs and monitors.
- Dual switch: a 4:3 or 16:9 format selector and a second setting according to the supplier.
What it doesn't do
- It does not add detail: the console's 240p is enlarged, not redrawn. A line-multiplying converter such as the OSSC remains the reference for purists.
- In 16:9, the image is stretched: 4:3 respects the games' proportions.
- It does not suit consoles that do not output RGB, nor brands other than those listed.
- It needs USB power.

The job: reconnecting the 16-bit consoles without a CRT TV
The Mega Drive or the Neo Geo comes back out, but the CRT TV left long ago. You plug the converter into the console's AV output, an HDMI cable to the screen, the USB power, and choose the 4:3 format to keep the original proportions. No tools, no modification.
