From the JAMMA board to the control panel: the parts that matter

An arcade project reads on three levels

  • Control: 8-way lever with square gate, 24 and 30 mm snap-in buttons, a USB encoder recognised by MAME or a Raspberry Pi, 5-pin harness in XH2.54 or Dupont.
  • Signal: the Supergun JAMMA CBOX outputs RGBS over SCART, accepts DB15 controllers and runs off a salvaged ATX power supply.
  • Memory: the 28-pin FRAM chips FM1808, FM18W08 and FM16W08 give back their independence to boards whose saves relied on a battery.

A Supergun is neither a console nor an emulator

It is an interface: it powers a JAMMA board and converts its output for a TV with an RGB SCART socket. It contains no games, supplies neither the ATX power supply nor the board, and assumes a display able to take a 15 kHz RGBS signal. Without all three of those, the box stays unused on the shelf.

What it doesn't do

  • No game board, neither JAMMA PCB nor MVS cartridge: only the interfaces are offered.
  • No screen, no CRT and no cabinet: the furniture side is not covered.
  • The FRAM chip means desoldering then soldering 28 pins; this is not a job you do without tools.

Questions fréquentes

What do you need to plan for around a JAMMA Supergun?
Three things at minimum: an ATX power supply, a game board in JAMMA format and a screen that accepts RGBS over SCART. Controllers connect via DB15. None of this is included with the CBOX, which acts solely as the interface between the board and the TV.
Does the USB encoder work with a Raspberry Pi?
Yes, the encoder presents itself as a standard USB device, recognised on a PC under MAME as well as on a Raspberry Pi. Wiring needs no soldering thanks to the supplied 5-pin harness and the button spade terminals. Key mapping is then done in software, not on the encoder.
Do Hall effect joysticks fix drift on the Odin 2?
The Hall effect modules offered for the Odin 2, Odin 2 Mini and Odin 2 Portal read position through a magnetic field instead of a resistive track that wears out. Drift caused by mechanical wear therefore disappears at the source. Swapping them is still a teardown job, caps included.
