Why emulate the PSP on a handheld

Launched in 2004, the PlayStation Portable was the first pocket console to offer genuine home-console productions on the move. Its library has aged remarkably well: God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Persona 3 Portable, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, Daxter, Patapon, LocoRoco, Wipeout Pure or Dissidia Final Fantasy.

Emulation brings a spectacular visual gain here, more striking than on any other PlayStation system. The original screen displayed 480×272 pixels; by multiplying the render resolution, games regain clean edges and legible textures on a modern panel. Many titles simply look better than they did at release. Add to that the usual advantages: save states, fast forward through dialogue, free remapping of controls and a whole library on a single microSD card.

What you need for good PSP emulation

The PSP demands appreciably more power than the PS1, but stays a long way from the requirements of the PlayStation 2. The reference emulator, PPSSPP, is mature, extensively documented and shows high compatibility across the whole catalogue. In practice, most of the Android chips in our selection cope well; the difference lies more in the headroom available to raise the render resolution than in the ability to launch games at all.

The criteria that really matter:

• The screen format. The PSP outputs natively in 16:9. It is the only PlayStation system for which a wide panel is the most coherent choice: the image fills the screen with no black bars and no distortion. On a 4:3 screen, expect black bars at the top and bottom.
• The render resolution. This is the setting that changes everything. Moving to 2× or 3× transforms the look, at a power cost that stays reasonable. The beefiest models let you go higher without sacrificing smoothness.
• The sticks. The original PSP had only one analogue stick; a single stick is therefore enough to play. But a second stick is a game changer on titles with a free camera, particularly the Monster Hunter series, where you can finally abandon the famous "claw" grip.
• The triggers. The PSP only used L and R. The analogue L2/R2 triggers present on several models are therefore not necessary here, but remain useful for other systems.

Two honest clarifications. First, compatibility is very good but not perfect: depending on the model and the emulator version, a few titles may show display glitches or occasional slowdowns, often fixable with a setting. Second, PSP emulation does not require the original console's BIOS, which makes getting started noticeably simpler than with the PS1 or the PS2.

Compact and affordable

The Anbernic RG406V (Unisoc T820, 4" screen, Android 13) is the smallest in the selection: ideal if size comes first, with the drawback of more pronounced black bars on a screen close to 4:3. The Anbernic RG476H and the Anbernic RG Slide share the same chip with a 4.7" 120 Hz screen, the latter adopting a sliding format that protects the panel.

The best balance for the PSP

As the PSP is natively 16:9, wide screens suit it particularly well. The Anbernic RG556 offers a 5.48" 1080p AMOLED panel, a very good compromise between image size and portability. The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro (Dimensity 1100, 4.7" 16:9 IPS screen, active cooling) and the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 (Snapdragon 865, 5.5" AMOLED, clamshell format) offer comfortable power reserves for raising the render resolution.

High-end and large screen

The Retroid Pocket 5 (Snapdragon 865, 5.5" 1080p AMOLED) and the Anbernic RG557 (Dimensity 8300, 12 GB of RAM, Android 14) leave very wide headroom for the most ambitious settings. The AYN Odin 2 Portal takes the logic all the way with a 7" 16:9 AMOLED screen at 1080p and an 8000 mAh battery: the format closest to an enlarged PSP. The Anbernic RG 477M, with its 4:3 screen and aluminium chassis, remains an excellent machine, but its format serves earlier systems better than the PSP.

Are PSP games supplied?

No, our consoles are sold without commercial games. Backup copying is only allowed for strictly private use and provided you own the original. You must therefore use your own games, or turn to royalty-free content and independent productions distributed legally. We supply no commercial ROMs and no download addresses.

Do all PSP games work?

Compatibility is among the best in retro gaming, without being total. The vast majority of titles run correctly, often with an image far superior to the original screen. A few games using particular effects may show artefacts or slow down in certain scenes, depending on the model and the emulator version. Adjusting the graphics settings resolves most cases.

How do I transfer my games?

You copy your files from a computer to the microSD card, with a card reader or a USB cable depending on the model. PSP games generally come as disc images, sometimes compressed to take up less space. Store them in a dedicated folder: the emulator then detects them automatically and fetches the cover art if the console is connected to Wi-Fi.

What battery life on PSP games?

The PSP sits in an intermediate zone: more demanding than the PS1, far more frugal than the PS2. The batteries in this selection range from 5000 to 8000 mAh depending on the model. The main lever remains the render resolution: playing at 1× or 2× uses considerably less than at 4×. Brightness and refresh rate also weigh in.

Can I recover my PSP saves?

Yes. The emulator reproduces the structure of the PSP memory stick, and save files transfer from one machine to another by simple copying. You also have save states, which freeze the game at the exact moment you stop. Remember to copy those folders regularly to a computer or to the cloud.

Linux or Android for the PSP?

Both environments can emulate the PSP, but Android keeps the advantage: the emulator is updated very regularly there, the settings are more accessible and the available power lets you raise the render resolution. A light Linux console remains perfect for 2D systems and the PS1, but it will offer less headroom as soon as you want to enhance your PSP games.
