Charging modules

The charging modules gathered here add or repair the power supply of a retro console: a TP4056 board for a 1S lithium cell, a solder-in USB-C module for the Game Boy Advance SP, a USB-C power board for the Game Gear in revisions VA0 to VA5, and a USB-A to USB-C cable from 0.3 to 2 m for today's handhelds.

Generic charging board or console-specific module: how to decide

Universal or cut to fit a specific chassis

The TP4056 is a universal board: it charges any 1S lithium cell and is wired by hand, so it fits anywhere but mounts nowhere on its own. The USB-C module for the Game Boy Advance SP and the Game Gear power board are the opposite: cut to the shape of the console, they replace the factory connector and go in faster, but they only serve the machine they were made for. For the Game Gear, identify the board revision, because VA0 to VA5 do not share the same layout.

A cable is not a charging circuit

The 0.3 to 2 m USB-A to USB-C cable powers a modern handheld that already has its own charging electronics. It does not turn a battery-powered console into a rechargeable one. Conversely, a module soldered in without a suitable lithium cell behind it produces nothing: the two go together.

What it doesn't do

These modules do not include the battery, which is ordered separately. Nor do they repair a torn circuit board trace around the original connector, a common case on power ports that have taken a beating. Finally, apart from the cable, none of them is ready to use: they all call for soldering.

Questions fréquentes

Does the TP4056 module work with all batteries?
It is designed for a single lithium-ion or lithium-polymer cell, known as 1S, at around 3.6 to 3.7 V nominal. It suits neither a pack of two cells in series nor NiMH batteries. The GBA SP, DS Lite and PSP batteries in the catalogue are indeed 1S.
How can I tell which Game Gear revision I own?
The VA0 to VA5 marking is screen-printed on the main board and visible once the shell is open. The USB-C power board covers these revisions, but the position of the connection points changes from one version to the next. Identify yours before heating anything up.
Can a Game Boy Advance SP be charged with a phone charger?
Not through the original connector, which uses a proprietary plug. The solder-in USB-C module replaces that port and then accepts a common USB-C charger. Regulation is still handled by the electronics of the console or the module, never by the charger alone.
