Pre-soldered Game Gear board: a new board instead of one to repair
The power board and the volume board are the two weak spots of a Game Gear: their capacitors leak and eat the traces. Rather than repairing a damaged board, you replace it with a new one whose components are already soldered. Pick the board you need.
What it does
- New power board: IC and capacitors already fitted, ready to take the old board's place.
- New volume board: replaces the original volume board, all Game Gear editions.
- Less risk: no tiny capacitors to solder onto a weakened board.
What it does not do
- One variant = one board: the power board and the volume board are ordered separately.
- It does not replace the main board capacitors, which call for a capacitor kit.
- Some Game Gear editions need a different power adapter with the power board (12 V 3 A, 5.5 × 2.1 mm or 5.5 × 2.5 mm plug, centre negative), not included.
- It does not repair the speaker or the screen.
Compatibility
Volume board: all Game Gear editions. Power board: most Game Gear with their original adapter; if the console does not start with yours, you need an adapter matching the line above.
Skill level
Intermediate: open the console with a Phillips screwdriver, remove the old board and redo the soldered links with the main board. A fine-tip soldering iron is recommended.

The job: replacing the board rather than nursing it
When the capacitors have leaked on the power or volume board, the traces are often damaged. Rather than scraping, bridging and resoldering, remove the old board and fit a new one. The console starts again and the volume adjusts properly.
