12 V power supply board for PS1: replacing a thirty-year-old mains unit

In an original PlayStation, the internal power supply unit has been working directly on mains power for decades, and its components are ageing: the console powers on poorly, switches off or no longer starts. This Rev 2.0 board takes the place of the old unit and is powered at 12 V from an external mains adapter.

What it does

• Replaces the internal unit: you remove the original power supply and install the board in its place.
• 12 V input: mains power stays outside the console, in an external adapter.
• Two options: the board only, or the kit with its additional items shown on the variant image.

What it doesn't do

• It does not repair an optical drive, a motherboard or a video fault: if the failure does not come from the power supply, the console will not start again.
• The “Board only” variant has no mains adapter: provide a suitable 12 V power supply.
• It is not suitable for the PSone (compact model), which already uses an external adapter.

Compatibility

Original PlayStation, known as the “fat” model (model numbers SCPH-1xxx to SCPH-9xxx). The power supply unit changed shape over the motherboard revisions: send your console's model number to our customer service before ordering. Not covered: PSone (SCPH-100x and later), PS2.

Skill level required

Intermediate. Unplug the console from the mains and let it rest before opening. You need to remove the cover (Phillips screwdriver), unscrew and disconnect the old unit, install the board and then close it up. Depending on your console's revision, soldering may be necessary: if you do not solder, write to our customer service before ordering.
