Ergonomic Shells & Grips

Improve your mobile gaming comfort with our ergonomic shells and grips. Non-slip, ventilated or reinforced, these accessories give you a better hold, reduce fatigue and optimise your performance during long sessions on your retro handheld consoles

An ergonomic grip for a retro handheld console is the accessory that transforms the gaming experience the most for the smallest outlay. Anbernic, Retroid Pocket, TrimUI and Miyoo devices are designed slim so they slide into a pocket: excellent for carrying, less so for your hands. Adding handles restores a volume close to that of a controller and changes how the console feels after an hour of play.

Why a grip changes everything

A flat console forces a pinch hold: your fingers close around a thin edge and the small muscles of the hand end up carrying the device. Fine for ten minutes, tiring after an hour.

Weight and wrist angle

A grip shifts the load onto the palm and the base of the fingers, which have far more endurance: the console rests in the hollow of your hand. The weight goes up slightly, the fatigue goes down, because holding it becomes passive. The handles also spread your hands apart and straighten your forearms.

Triggers and grip

The shoulder triggers on compact consoles are thin and close together. By widening the hold, a grip gives your index and middle fingers a stable position and allows two fingers per side, which matters on PS1 and PSP games. Smooth shells also become slippery once your hands get warm; a textured surface removes the need to clench.

3D printing or injection moulding

The 3D-printed grip

Produced by filament deposition, it is recognisable by its fine ridges and grainy feel. Its advantage is responsiveness: a console released this month can have a dedicated grip a few weeks later, which is why niche models are covered this way. The material, usually PLA or PETG, is light and the matte finish grips well. In return, the layer lines stay visible and heat resistance is limited with PLA.

The injection-moulded grip

Injection moulding produces a smooth or finely grained surface, with no ridges and consistent tolerances. ABS and polycarbonate handle impacts and heat better. Because tooling costs are high, this process is only used for widely distributed consoles. Neither method is superior: injection moulding wins on finish, 3D printing wins on catalogue coverage.

Handling according to hand size

Large hands

This is the profile that gains the most from the change: on a compact console, large hands have nowhere to rest and the little finger hangs in mid-air. Tall, deep handles give every finger something to hold.

Medium hands

A grip of moderate depth is enough: fill the hollow of the palm without forcing the thumbs apart, as they need to reach the D-pad and the action buttons without strain.

Small hands

Be wary of very bulky grips: they push the controls so far away that the D-pad diagonals become uncomfortable. A slim grip, designed for adhesion and for thickening the edge rather than creating real handles, often gives a better result.

Compatibility and bulk

A grip hugs one specific chassis: it has to leave the screen, the triggers, the USB-C port, the headphone jack and the microSD slots clear. A few millimetres of difference between two generations is enough to make a model unusable. Grips are therefore sold per console reference: check compatibility on the product page.

The downside is bulk. A grip adds several millimetres of thickness and a pronounced contour at the back: a console that used to slide into a jacket pocket may no longer fit, and a case cut for the bare console will no longer close without force. Two approaches coexist: the removable grip and the permanent grip, which is more stable in play. If your console lives in a pocket, go for a removable model.

Our selection

Our catalogue covers the main platforms. The ergonomic grip for Retroid Pocket 5 and the Miyoo Mini Plus ergonomic grip are described as ergonomic. The grip for Anbernic RG-Slide and the grip for the RG35XX H handheld console target two distinct Anbernic formats, while the TrimUI Brick grip is aimed at TrimUI's compact format. This collection also includes the Retroid Dual Screen Add-on, a portable AMOLED display module that belongs to display expansion rather than ergonomics. For the added thickness and the exact cut-outs, refer to each product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a grip useful on a small console?

That is precisely where it helps most. The slimmer the console, the more the pinch hold loads the small muscles of the hand. A grip transfers the load to the palm, straightens the wrists and stabilises access to the triggers. You feel the difference within the first hour of play.

3D printing or injection moulding?

Injection moulding offers a smoother finish, consistent tolerances and better resistance to impacts and heat. 3D printing covers niche consoles that injection moulding could never make profitable, with a matte, tacky feel. On a recent model it is often the only option, and it does the job.

Is the grip compatible with my console?

Grips are designed for one specific chassis, because they have to leave the screen, the triggers and the ports clear. A variant from the same range may not fit. Do not rely on the product family name: check compatibility on the product page using your console's exact reference.

Does a grip stop the console fitting in its case?

Often, yes. A case cut for the bare console makes no allowance for the added contour at the back, and forcing it shut puts pressure on the controls. Two solutions: a removable grip, or a more generous case. Check compatibility on the product pages.

Does a grip improve protection?

Indirectly. It thickens the back and keeps the shell away from flat surfaces, which limits scratches on the rear. But its role remains ergonomics: it protects neither the screen nor the corners. A pouch or a hard case is still essential when travelling.
