BlueRetro N64 adapter: play with a current Bluetooth controller
Original N64 controllers wear out, their cables break and the buttons tire. This BlueRetro adapter made by RetroScaler plugs into the N64 controller ports and accepts a current Bluetooth controller. The firmware is open source and updates wirelessly, from a web browser.
What it does
- Recent Bluetooth controllers: supports PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One S and Series X|S, Wiimote, Wii U Pro, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, 8BitDo and Retro-Bit controllers over Bluetooth.
- Up to four controllers at once: the adapter handles up to four Bluetooth controllers simultaneously, for multiplayer sessions.
- Open-source BlueRetro firmware: the BlueRetro project runs on an ESP32 chip; button remapping and updates are done from a web page, with no cable.
- No console modification: nothing to open or solder, and the adapter comes out as easily as it goes in.
What it doesn't do
- It does not support wireless controllers with a 2.4 GHz USB dongle, nor the wireless Xbox 360 controller: they do not use Bluetooth.
- The configuration page requires a Web Bluetooth-compatible browser (Chrome or Edge on a computer, Chrome on Android): Safari, Firefox, iPhone and iPad cannot open it.
- A wireless link adds a delay, however small, compared with a wired controller: in games with very tight timing, an attentive player may notice it.
- The stick of a modern controller has neither the travel nor the octagonal gate of the original stick: remapping helps, without reproducing the same feel.
- The controller is not included.
