BlueRetro Master System adapter: play with a current Bluetooth controller
Original Master System controllers wear out, their cables break and the buttons tire. This BlueRetro adapter made by RetroScaler plugs into the Master System controller port and accepts a current Bluetooth controller. The firmware is open source and updates wirelessly, from a web browser.
What it does
- Recent Bluetooth controllers: supports PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One S and Series X|S, Wiimote, Wii U Pro, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, 8BitDo and Retro-Bit controllers over Bluetooth.
- Direct connection: it plugs into the Master System controller port like an original controller, without opening the console.
- Open-source BlueRetro firmware: the BlueRetro project runs on an ESP32 chip; button remapping and updates are done from a web page, with no cable.
- No console modification: nothing to open or solder, and the adapter comes out as easily as it goes in.
What it doesn't do
- It does not support wireless controllers with a 2.4 GHz USB dongle, nor the wireless Xbox 360 controller: they do not use Bluetooth.
- The configuration page requires a Web Bluetooth-compatible browser (Chrome or Edge on a computer, Chrome on Android): Safari, Firefox, iPhone and iPad cannot open it.
- A wireless link adds a delay, however small, compared with a wired controller: in games with very tight timing, an attentive player may notice it.
- The Light Phaser gun and special accessories are not replaced.
- The controller is not included.
Compatibility
Master System and Master System II, on the original controller port. One adapter corresponds to one player. It is not suitable for the Game Gear.

No soldering, no disassembly. Plug the adapter into the Master System controller port, put the controller into pairing mode, then play. Button remapping and firmware updates go through a Web Bluetooth-compatible browser. Beginner level.
