BlueRetro adapter for Mega Drive: a modern Bluetooth controller on the original console
Original Mega Drive controllers often have a worn D-pad and a short cable. This BlueRetro adapter by RetroScaler (reference RSBL-231102) plugs in place of the wired controller on a Mega Drive 1 or 2, or a Genesis, and receives a modern Bluetooth controller: PS3, PS4, PS5, 8BitDo M30, Switch controller or Wii U Pro.
What it does
- BlueRetro firmware: free (open source) firmware on an ESP32 chip, which recognises a wide list of Bluetooth controllers and keeps evolving.
- Button remapping: button assignment is set from the BlueRetro web interface, in a browser that supports Web Bluetooth.
- Stated range of 10 metres: enough to play from the sofa.
- No work on the console: plugs into the controller port, without disassembly or soldering.
What it doesn't do
- It only handles Bluetooth controllers: a controller with a 2.4 GHz USB dongle will not connect.
- The PS3 controller requires an additional pairing step, via USB cable from a computer.
- Bluetooth adds latency: low, but higher than that of a wired controller.
- It does not replace a light gun or accessories that are not controllers.

The job: plug in, pair, play
You remove the wired controller, plug the adapter in its place and put the Bluetooth controller in pairing mode. The Mega Drive receives the commands as if from an original controller. You play from the sofa, without a short cable forcing you to sit at the foot of the TV, with a D-pad that still responds crisply.
The part: BlueRetro, a free firmware
BlueRetro is open source firmware that runs on an ESP32 chip. RetroScaler builds it into a housing with a Mega Drive connector. The benefit lies in the community: the recognised controllers and settings grow with each version, and remapping lets you place A, B and C where your thumb expects them.
Support: choosing the right controller
For the Mega Drive, a controller with six face buttons such as the 8BitDo M30 recreates the original layout. Check that it is indeed Bluetooth: a model with a USB dongle will not connect. If in doubt about pairing or remapping, our customer service replies within 1 business day.
