Where should you start on a console that no longer switches on?
With the power supply, in this order: external source, charging connector, battery. A battery more than fifteen years old has often lost most of its capacity, and a tired charging port gives exactly the same symptom as a dead console. Only once those two causes are ruled out do you open it up to inspect the board.
Does a FRAM chip do away with the save battery?
Yes, that is the principle: the 28-pin FRAM memories of the FM1808, FM18W08 or FM16W08 type keep the data without a permanent power supply. In exchange, the job means desoldering the old chip and soldering a new one across 28 pins, which is not a first soldering project.
Which capacitor kit should you take for a recap?
The kits cover the 16 to 50 V range in through-hole format, which matches the most common retro boards. First note the values printed on the original capacitors: capacitance in microfarads and voltage. The voltage of the new component can be equal or higher, never lower, and the capacitance must stay the same.
