Dreamcast cooling kit: a quieter console
The Dreamcast's original fan is known for being noisy, and it wears out over the years. This TicKnot kit supplies an injection-moulded bracket that lets you install a quieter brushless 5 V fan in its place. Three versions: bracket and fan, bracket only, or fan only.
What it does
- Dedicated bracket: holds a 5 V fan in the position of the original fan.
- Moulded part: made by injection moulding rather than 3D printing.
- Three versions: complete kit, bracket only if you already have the fan, or fan only.
What it doesn't do
- It does not fix overheating caused by dried-out thermal paste or a clogged heatsink: clean them at the same time.
- It does not reduce the noise of the disc drive, only that of the cooling.
- A 12 V fan is not suitable: you need a 5 V model.
- The “bracket only” version does not contain a fan, and the “fan only” version does not contain a bracket.
Compatibility
Dreamcast, all regions. The very first motherboards (VA0 revision, recognisable by their fan mounted on a metal heatsink) have different cooling and are generally not covered by this type of bracket: open your console to check before ordering.
Skill level required
Intermediate level. You need to open the Dreamcast with a Phillips screwdriver, unplug and remove the original fan, install the bracket and the new fan, then plug it in. Depending on your fan's connector, a cable adapter may be needed: check it before starting.

The job: quietening the Dreamcast
A running Dreamcast can be heard from the sofa: its small fan spins fast and wears out with age. You open the console, remove the original fan, install the moulded bracket and a quieter 5 V fan, plug it back in and close it up. The console keeps its cooling, without the whine.
The part: a moulded bracket, not a printed one
Many brackets of this type are 3D-printed. TicKnot's is injection-moulded, for a part that is consistent from one unit to the next. It is designed for a brushless 5 V fan, supplied in the complete kit or sold on its own if you already have the bracket.
Support: checking your revision
Before ordering, open your Dreamcast: if the fan is mounted on a metal heatsink, it is probably a VA0 board, generally not covered. Take advantage of the opening to remove the dust. If in doubt, send us a photo: our customer service replies within 1 business day.
