Shells & styling

Shells and styling brings together everything to do with the outer casing of a retro console: complete housings for the Game Boy, DS Lite and GBA SP, PSP battery covers, screen lenses, logo-free cartridge shells and button sets in up to 15 colours. Add to that deburring tools, carbide burrs and acrylic sheet for the finishing touches.

Styling a retro console: complete housing, individual part and plastic finishing

From a complete shell to a single cosmetic part

Not every restoration needs a new housing. The PSP 2000 and 3000 battery cover, the DS Lite screen lens and frame, or the cartridge shell for the Game Boy, Color and Advance each replace a single broken part. Complete DS Lite, GBA SP and Game Boy shells are the way to go when the plastic is cracked or yellowed all over.

A third-party shell almost always needs some finishing

Third-party mouldings leave parting lines and burrs along the edges. That's where the rotary-blade deburring kit and the 3.2 mm carbide burrs sold in packs of ten come in: a few passes are enough to remove the excess material that stops a shell from closing. The mirror acrylic sheet is used for bartop front panels and modding projects.

What it doesn't do

  • No electronic repairs: changing the shell won't fix a dead button or a faulty daughterboard.
  • No screen included: IPS-ready shells are cut for an IPS panel that is ordered separately.
  • No guaranteed shade: from one batch to the next, the same shell colour may vary slightly.

Questions fréquentes

Which cosmetic parts can you change without opening the console?
Not many, in fact. The PSP 2000 and 3000 battery cover clips on from the outside, and a cartridge shell can be replaced without touching the console. Everything else, whether a complete housing, screen lens or button set, means unscrewing the shell and often removing the motherboard.
Why does a new shell sometimes refuse to close?
Most often because of a moulding burr on the parting line or around the screw posts. A rotary-blade deburring kit or a 3.2 mm carbide burr removes this excess in a few passes. Also check that no ribbon cable is pinched between the two halves of the shell before forcing it.
Are the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance button sets interchangeable?
No, they are two separate parts. The Game Boy Color set includes A/B, the D-pad and Start/Select, while the Game Boy Advance set adds the L and R shoulder buttons. The shapes and thicknesses differ from one console to the other, with 15 colours listed for each.
