Carbide rotary burrs: touching up a shell without marking it
Fitting an IPS screen, opening a path for a ribbon cable, widening a button cut-out or clearing space for a USB-C port: on a handheld console shell, the material to remove is measured in tenths of a millimetre. These ten tungsten carbide burrs fit any rotary tool with a 3.2 mm collet and replace the hand file, with a double cut that breaks up the chip instead of letting it curl.
What it does
- Ten different profiles: cylinder, ball, cone, flame, tree… depending on the shape, you enlarge a straight opening, round off a corner or hollow out a recess.
- Tungsten carbide: harder than high-speed steel, the burr keeps its cutting edge on shell ABS as well as on the aluminium or brass of a shield.
- 3.2 mm (1/8") shank: the standard diameter for rotary tool collets, and a drill chuck takes it too.
What it doesn't do
- It is not a straight-cutting tool: to open a clean screen window, a burr is used to finish the edge, not to cut the line. Use a template or a cut-off wheel.
- No burr can make up for a hand that moves too fast: on thin plastic, a pass with too much pressure melts the material instead of cutting it.
- The manufacturer is not identified (generic unbranded reference), and no depth stop is supplied: depth is judged by eye.
- This reference is not designed for hardened steel or stone.
- Workshop part sold on its own: no rotary tool, collet or sanding consumables.
Compatibility
Compatible with any rotary tool accepting a 3.2 mm shank — the most common format on Dremel-type rotary tools and their equivalents — as well as with a chuck drill. Tools with a 2.35 mm collet (dental micromotors, fine engravers) do not accept them. Materials: ABS and polycarbonate shell plastics, wood, aluminium, brass, mild steel. No hardened steel, no glass, no ceramics.
Skill level required
No soldering. But the rotary tool spins fast and carbide removes material faster than you think: start at low speed, on a plastic offcut, before touching a shell. Safety glasses and a mask are essential, as ABS dust and metal chips are not harmless. Always secure the workpiece: a shell held by hand will fly off with the burr.
In the box
- 10 tungsten carbide rotary burrs, double cut, 3.2 mm shank, overall length 43 to 51 mm.
- The wooden storage stand advertised by the supplier is not guaranteed in every batch: do not count on it.

The job: where the hand file gives up
An IPS screen mod, an added USB-C port, a ribbon cable to route through: each time, the shell has to give up a few tenths of a millimetre at a precise spot. With a file, it takes an hour and the edge stays uneven. With a carbide burr on a rotary tool, material comes away in small controlled passes and the final corner closes cleanly. It is the tool that makes the difference between a cut-out you can see and one you don't notice.
The part: double-cut carbide, 3.2 mm shank
Tungsten carbide is harder than high-speed steel: it does not go blunt after two shells. The double cut — two crossed sets of teeth — breaks up the chip instead of letting it wind around the burr, which matters above all on ABS, where a continuous chip immediately melts back onto the edge. The ten profiles cover everyday tasks: the cylinder to enlarge a straight opening, the ball to round off, the cone and flame to rework a tight corner.
Good to know before ordering
This is a generic workshop consumable: no manufacturer is identified for this reference, and the wooden storage stand advertised by the supplier is not guaranteed in every batch. These burrs do not fit tools with a 2.35 mm collet, and they do not replace a cut-off wheel for a straight cut. Practise on a plastic offcut before touching a shell: at full speed, carbide removes a lot of material very quickly. Product page checked on 19 August 2026.

Ce qu’il fait bien
- Tungsten carbide: keeps its edge on ABS as well as aluminium
- Ten profiles (cylinder, ball, cone, flame, tree…) to enlarge, round off or hollow out
- Double cut: breaks up chips instead of curling them, less clogging on plastic
- 3.2 mm shank, the standard for rotary tool collets
Ce qu’il ne fait pas
- Does not replace a cut-off wheel for a straight cut: the burr finishes the edge, it does not cut the line
- On thin plastic, a pass with too much pressure melts the material
- No depth stop: depth is judged by eye
- Not designed for hardened steel, glass or ceramics
- Manufacturer not identified (generic unbranded reference)
- Does not fit tools with a 2.35 mm collet

Frequently Asked Questions
🔧 Do I need to solder to use these burrs?
No, no soldering. You do, however, need a rotary tool with a 3.2 mm collet, plus a way to secure the workpiece.
🎮 Which tools do they fit?
Any rotary tool accepting a 3.2 mm (1/8") shank, the most common format, as well as a chuck drill. Tools with a 2.35 mm collet do not accept them.
✂️ Can I cut out an IPS screen window with them?
For finishing the edge, yes: that is actually their best use. For cutting the opening itself, no — use a cut-off wheel or a template, then rework the edge with the burr.
🧱 Which materials can they handle?
ABS and polycarbonate shell plastics, wood, aluminium, brass, mild steel. No hardened steel, no glass, no ceramics.
📦 What is in the box?
10 tungsten carbide rotary burrs, double cut, 3.2 mm shank, overall length 43 to 51 mm. The wooden stand advertised by the supplier is not guaranteed in every batch.
🧰 What equipment should I have?
Safety glasses and a dust mask, a vice or clamps to hold the workpiece, and a plastic offcut to set the speed before you start.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days.
🛡️ Which guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns. Reply within 1 business day.
