IPS screen kit for Neo Geo Pocket: finally readable without a bedside lamp
The 1998 black and white Neo Geo Pocket has a screen with no backlight: you need strong light to make anything out. This kit replaces that panel with a backlit IPS screen with an OSD menu and a retro pixel effect, so you can play in any lighting conditions.
What it does
- IPS backlight: the picture stays readable in dim light and from wide viewing angles.
- OSD menu: brightness, colour palettes and display are adjusted on screen.
- Retro pixel effect: an optional grid recalls the look of the original screen.
What it doesn't do
- It does not turn the console into a Neo Geo Pocket Color. Games are still displayed in greyscale; the menu palettes tint the picture, they do not recreate the colour of Color games.
- It is not suitable for the Neo Geo Pocket Color or the Color Slim: they require different kits.
- It replaces neither the shell, nor the screen lens, nor the batteries: only the screen changes.

Black and white Neo Geo Pocket (original model, 1998). Not compatible with the Neo Geo Pocket Color and the Neo Geo Pocket Color Slim, whose screen and motherboard differ.
Skill level required
Intermediate level. You need to open the console, disconnect and remove the original screen, then install the new screen and its electronics. On this type of kit, a few thin wires need to be soldered for power or access to the OSD menu: have a fine-tip soldering iron, thin wire and a screwdriver suited to the console's screws ready.

The job: lighting up a Neo Geo Pocket again
On an original Neo Geo Pocket, you tilt the console towards the window to guess at the picture. Once this kit is installed, the screen lights up on its own: you can play in the evening, on the train, under the covers. The work is done with the console open, removing the old panel and connecting the new screen.
The part: an IPS screen adjustable on screen
The IPS panel keeps its contrast when tilted, where the original screen fades. The OSD menu adjusts brightness and tints the picture with several palettes, and an optional pixel effect recalls the grid of the original screen. The console remains a black and white Neo Geo Pocket: games do not switch to colour.
