Repair & restoration

Repairing and restoring a retro console almost always follows the same order: make the power supply reliable, get a readable display back, redo the contacts. This selection brings together replacement screens, batteries, shells, capacitor kits for recapping, speakers, USB-C charging modules, FRAM memories and precision tooling.

Where to start when repairing a retro console

Three families of faults cover most cases

  • Power supply: a swollen or dead battery, a torn-off charging port. 1500 mAh batteries for the Game Boys, 2000 mAh for the DS Lite, USB-C and TP4056 modules for the rest.
  • Display: a cracked panel, vertical lines, a scratched lens. LCD and IPS panels from 2.45 to 3.5 inches, lenses and protective glass.
  • Contacts and sound: buttons that stick, a silent L or R trigger, a crackling speaker. Micro switches, conductive rubber pads and speakers to solder.

Recapping is not a reflex to apply everywhere

The 16 to 50 V electrolytic capacitor kits sold here are through-hole models: they are meant for boards whose capacitors are soldered through the circuit, not for fully SMD boards where the format and the height differ. Systematically replacing healthy capacitors mostly multiplies the chances of tearing off a pad. You recap when the symptom justifies it: muffled sound, unstable picture, a visible leak.

What it doesn't do

  • No repair service: the shop supplies the parts and the tools, not the labour.
  • No electrical diagnostic instrument: no multimeter, no bench power supply.
  • A motherboard that has been flooded or corroded for years cannot be brought back with a replacement part.

Questions fréquentes

Where should you start on a console that no longer switches on?
With the power supply, in this order: external source, charging connector, battery. A battery more than fifteen years old has often lost most of its capacity, and a tired charging port gives exactly the same symptom as a dead console. Only once those two causes are ruled out do you open it up to inspect the board.
Does a FRAM chip do away with the save battery?
Yes, that is the principle: the 28-pin FRAM memories of the FM1808, FM18W08 or FM16W08 type keep the data without a permanent power supply. In exchange, the job means desoldering the old chip and soldering a new one across 28 pins, which is not a first soldering project.
Which capacitor kit should you take for a recap?
The kits cover the 16 to 50 V range in through-hole format, which matches the most common retro boards. First note the values printed on the original capacitors: capacitance in microfarads and voltage. The voltage of the new component can be equal or higher, never lower, and the capacitance must stay the same.
