Diamond needle files: fitting a cut-out to a tenth of a millimetre
Fitting an IPS screen into an original shell, enlarging a button opening, reworking the edge of a 3D-printed part: these jobs come down to a fraction of a millimetre. This set of ten diamond-grit files removes material slowly, without tearing the plastic. Overall length 140 mm, 3 mm body.
What it does
- Fine fitting: opens up and trues a screen, button or port cut-out on a plastic shell, smoothly.
- Diamond grit: also cuts glass, ceramics, stone and hard metals, which the steel of a conventional file cannot work.
- Needle format: the 3 mm section gets into corners and between the internal ribs of a shell, where sandpaper cannot reach.
What it doesn't do
- Does not replace a rotary tool: everything is done by hand, allow several minutes of work for one millimetre of plastic.
- Does not leave a paint-ready surface: the medium grit leaves scratches, which need reworking with wet sandpaper from 800 grit upwards.
- Not suitable for soft, sticky materials — soft plastic, aluminium, lead, tin: they clog the diamond coating and glaze it permanently.

Compatibility

A dust mask is recommended on glass and stone. A quick brush with a brass brush after use prevents the diamond coating from clogging.

The millimetre that decides everything
An IPS screen that won't go in, a button that catches, a replacement shell whose cut-out is off: most failed builds come down to a fraction of a millimetre. The needle file is the tool for that moment. Remove a little, test-fit the part, repeat. Material removed doesn't come back, so you work in small passes.
Diamond rather than steel
A steel file attacks plastic by tearing it and slides over glass or ceramics.
