IPS screen kit for PC Engine GT: replace the original screen with a 3.5-inch panel

The PC Engine GT's original screen is small, dark and smears at the slightest scroll, when it is not simply dead. This Hispeedido IPS screen kit replaces it with a bright 3.5-inch panel at 640 × 480, with an OSD menu and an RGBS board that takes the video signal from the console. It is a full modding project: soldering and cutting of the shell.

What it does

• 3.5-inch IPS panel: larger than the original screen, readable from every angle.
• 640 × 480 resolution: a sharp picture, far from the original screen.
• Built-in OSD menu: picture settings displayed on screen.
• RGBS board included: to take the console's video signal.

What it doesn't do

• It cannot be installed without soldering: the RGBS board is wired onto the motherboard.
• It cannot be installed without cutting: the opening of the original shell is too small for a 3.5-inch panel.
• It is not suitable for the PC Engine LT or other consoles in the range.
• It does not repair a faulty console: check that it starts up and produces sound before you begin.

Compatibility

PC Engine GT and its North American version, the TurboExpress, which share the same electronics. Not compatible with the PC Engine LT, home PC Engine consoles or any other handheld console.

Skill level required

Expert. You need to disassemble the console, remove the old screen, wire and solder the RGBS board onto the motherboard, enlarge the shell opening with a mini drill and a file, then fix the panel. Have a fine-tip iron, flux, desoldering braid, a multimeter, a rotary tool and files ready. Get the screen working outside the shell before the final cut: once soldered, the kit is no longer in its original condition.
