3.5-inch IPS screen kit for Sega Nomad: the portable Mega Drive finally readable

The original Sega Nomad screen is blurry and leaves trails in fast scenes. This kit replaces it with a 3.5-inch IPS panel at 640 × 480, driven by an RGB board and adjustable through an OSD menu. This is an advanced modification that requires soldering.

What it does

• 640 × 480 IPS panel: sharp, high-contrast picture, wide viewing angles.
• Dedicated RGB board: the screen receives the console's video signal through a supplied conversion board.
• OSD menu: MODE + A + B for one second opens the menu; 15 brightness levels, 8 colour modes, retro pixel effects and scanlines.
• Screen lens included: a new protective lens comes with the screen.

What it doesn't do

• This is not a no-solder kit. Several wires need to be soldered to the Nomad's motherboard.
• It is suitable neither for the Game Gear nor for the PC Engine GT.
• It does not fix the Nomad's original capacitors, which are known to leak: replacing them at the same time is recommended.
• Mounting the screen in the shell requires a suitable bracket, often 3D-printed, to be sourced separately.

Compatibility

Sega Nomad (1995) only. Not compatible with the Game Gear, the PC Engine GT or other handheld consoles.

Skill level required

Advanced level. You need to disassemble the Nomad, remove the original screen, then solder several wires between the kit board and the motherboard following a reliable wiring diagram. Have a fine-tip soldering iron, thin wire, a security screwdriver suited to the shell and some patience ready. At first power-on, brightness may be set to minimum: open the OSD menu before concluding there is a fault.
