JP-format case: a protected, presentable cartridge, even without its original box
Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges are almost always sold loose: the cardboard box disappeared long ago. This clear plastic case in Japanese format gives it a rigid shell again, with an inner tray that holds it upright and stops it from moving. The cartridge stays visible and readable on the shelf.
What it does
- Protects the label: the rigid shell absorbs the rubbing between cartridges stored side by side, the kind that lifts a corner of the sticker.
- Shields the contacts: with the case closed, the gold pins no longer pick up drawer dust or fingerprints.
- Stands upright: the inner tray holds the cartridge in place, and the case stands vertically like a game box, readable from the front.
What it doesn't do
- It is not a reproduction of an original box: no printed cover, no manual, no cardboard insert. The case is plain and clear.
- Does not restore a cartridge that is already oxidised: clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol before storing it.
- Does not extend the life of the save battery. A save that gets erased comes from the CR2025 battery soldered inside the cartridge, not from how it is stored.
- Not suitable for Game Boy Advance cartridges, which are shorter and thinner and float around in this slot.
