Screen kit for Game Gear: a sharp, bright display in place of the original screen

The Game Gear's original screen is dull, smears at the slightest movement, and its backlight wears out over the years. This Hispeedido backlit screen kit replaces it with a 3.5-inch panel driven by its own board, with a touch control to switch colour mode. It is sold on its own, with or without a lens, or together with a shell in the colour of your choice.

What it does

• 3.5-inch backlit screen: replaces the original screen with a larger, brighter panel.
• Touch control: the left touch area cycles through eight colour modes; a 3-second press switches the scanline effect on or off.
• Three picture formats: a 3-second press on both touch areas changes the format.
• VGA output provided for: START + 1 + 2 switches to VGA output, provided you add the VGA connector, sold separately.

What it doesn't do

• It cannot be installed without soldering: the supplied resistors, capacitors and wires are soldered onto the motherboard.
• It is not suitable for Game Gear consoles with a VA4 or VA5 motherboard, Majesco models or boards marked “MADE IN TAIWAN”.
• The VGA connector is not included.
• A shell with a metallised coating can trigger the touch control on its own: the manufacturer recommends removing this coating.
• In an original shell, trimming with a cutter or a file may be necessary.

Compatibility

Game Gear with a single-chip motherboard (VA1: 837-9130, 837-9024, 837-8560) or dual-chip motherboard (VA0: 837-7996, 837-7719-01, 837-7398-03), according to the manufacturer. Not compatible with VA4 and VA5 boards, Majesco models and “MADE IN TAIWAN” boards. The reference is printed on the motherboard: open the console to read it before ordering.

Skill level required

Advanced. You need to disassemble the Game Gear, remove the old screen, solder the kit's components and wires according to the guide for your board revision, connect the ribbon cables, then fix the screen with double-sided tape. Have a fine-tip iron, flux, desoldering braid and a multimeter ready. Get the screen working outside the shell before closing everything up: once soldered, the kit is no longer in its original condition.
