Game Boy Advance conductive rubber pads: buttons that respond again
On a console more than twenty years old, it is almost never the plastic button that fails: it is the conductive rubber pad underneath. The carbon contact wears out, hardens or gets dirty, and you have to press twice for a jump to register. This set of replacement membranes covers all three control areas of the Game Boy Advance: A-B, D-pad, Start/Select.
What it does
- Restores contact: the new carbon contact closes the circuit on the first press, with no hard pressing or double pressing.
- Covers all three areas: one A-B membrane, one membrane for the D-pad, one for Start/Select — the complete set for an AGB-001.
- Fits without soldering: the membranes sit on the board's contact pads and are held in place by the shell once it is closed.
- Soft silicone: crisp travel, neither mushy buttons nor hard contact, just like on an original console.
What it doesn't do
- It does not repair a damaged board: if the carbon traces on the circuit board are oxidised, scratched or torn off, changing the rubber pad will not be enough.
- It does not include the plastic buttons (A, B, D-pad, Start, Select), the screws or the shell: only the silicone membranes.
- It cannot be seen once the console is closed — the colour you choose stays inside the case.
- The supplier claims very broad compatibility (Game Boy Color, Pocket, Light, Micro, SP). The membrane cut-outs differ from one model to another: we only guarantee the Game Boy Advance AGB-001.
Compatibility
Game Boy Advance AGB-001, the horizontal model with a non-backlit screen (supplier reference "For GBA"). Not guaranteed on the Game Boy Advance SP (AGS-001 and AGS-101), Game Boy Micro, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Pocket or Game Boy Light: these machines use differently shaped membranes.
Skill level required
No soldering. You do, however, need to open the console: a tri-wing screwdriver (Y, 2.0 mm) for the shell screws and a Phillips for the battery compartment screw. Allow 10 to 15 minutes, including disassembly and reassembly. Clean the board's contact pads with isopropyl alcohol before fitting the membranes: half of all unresponsive buttons come down to that.

The button is not to blame
A Game Boy Advance from 2001 has twenty-five years of thumb presses on the clock. When a jump won't trigger or a movement stays stuck, the faulty part is almost always the same: the small carbon contact stuck under the silicone, which wears out, hardens and eventually stops closing the circuit. Changing the plastic button does nothing. Changing the membrane does.
Three membranes, the whole control layout
The set covers all three areas of the AGB-001: A-B on the right, D-pad on the left, Start/Select at the bottom. You place the membranes on the board's contact pads, close the shell and you're done: no soldering, no cutting, no adjustment. A tri-wing screwdriver to open it, a cloth and a little isopropyl alcohol to clean the pads, ten minutes of work.
What this part will not fix
If the carbon traces on the circuit board are oxidised, scratched or torn off, a new membrane will change nothing: it is the board that needs attention. The supplier also claims very broad compatibility, all the way to the Game Boy Micro and the SP, but the cut-outs differ from one model to another: we only guarantee the Game Boy Advance AGB-001.
