CR2025 batteries: a cartridge that keeps your games again
A Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridge that forgets your game every time it is switched off usually has a flat save battery. On many cartridges, this battery is a CR2025. These 3 V lithium coin cell batteries are sold in packs of 2, 5 or 10, for one cartridge or a whole shelf.
What it does
- CR2025 format: 20 mm in diameter, 2.5 mm thick, the reference printed on the original battery of many cartridges.
- 3 V lithium: the voltage expected by the save memory, with a stated nominal capacity of 150 mAh.
- Three pack sizes: 2, 5 or 10 batteries depending on the variant.
What it does not do
- These are bare batteries, without solder tabs. On a cartridge, the original battery is soldered: replacing it requires tabs or a battery holder, and soldering. Neither tabs nor holder are included.
- Changing the battery erases the save still in memory: the memory is no longer powered during the operation.
- They are not rechargeable and do not replace any handheld console battery.
- A cartridge that no longer saves may also have a broken trace or a faulty chip: the battery only fixes the most common case.
Compatibility
The criterion is the format: order the reference printed on the battery you remove. The CR2025 is fitted in many battery-backed Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. It replaces neither a CR2032, which is thicker, nor a CR1616, which is smaller.
Skill level
Opening the cartridge with a screwdriver suited to its security screw (a so-called “gamebit” bit), then soldering to attach the new battery with tabs or a holder. You will need a fine-tip soldering iron and solder. Never solder directly onto the body of a coin cell battery: the heat can damage it. Intermediate level.
