3 V lithium coin cells: saves that hold again
A cartridge that forgets your progress every time you switch off, an internal clock that resets to zero, a console that loses its settings: nine times out of ten, the save battery is flat. These 3 V lithium coin cells cover the most common formats in retro hardware — CR1616, CR1620 and CR1632 — in packs of 5 or 10.
What it does
- Three formats to choose from: CR1616, CR1620 or CR1632, all 3 V lithium. The format is printed right on the original battery.
- Sold in packs: 5 or 10 batteries depending on the variant, enough to handle a whole shelf of cartridges in a single order.
- Lithium chemistry: stable 3 V voltage over time, low self-discharge; this is the chemistry originally used in SRAM save cartridges.
What it doesn't do
- These are bare batteries, without solder tabs. In a cartridge, the original battery is soldered in by two tabs: you need either tabbed batteries, a battery holder, or careful soldering — we supply neither tabs nor holder.
- They are not rechargeable and do not replace any Li-ion battery in a handheld console.
- Changing the battery erases the save stored in memory: the SRAM loses power during the operation. Back up whatever needs saving before opening the cartridge.
- A cartridge that no longer saves may also suffer from a broken trace or a dead chip: the battery only fixes the most common case, not all of them.
- No battery comes with a tool: the gamebit-type screwdriver and the soldering iron are not in the box.
Compatibility
What matters is the format, not the machine: order the reference printed on the battery you remove. The CR1616 is the most widespread format in battery-backed Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges. The CR1620 and CR1632 are found in other 3 V boards and peripherals, as well as in watches, calculators and electronic toys. Not suitable for slots designed for a CR2025 or CR2032, which are wider: check before ordering.
Skill level required
Disassembly of the cartridge or casing, and most often soldering to reuse the original tabs. Have a screwdriver that fits the cartridge screw, a fine-tip soldering iron and solder ready. Never solder directly onto the body of a coin cell unless you know what you are doing: the heat can damage it.
In the box
- 5 or 10 lithium coin cells (3 V), in the chosen format (CR1616, CR1620 or CR1632).
Keep out of reach of children: swallowing a coin cell is a medical emergency. Do not puncture, heat or recharge. Take to a collection point at the end of its life.

The symptom, before the diagnosis
A cartridge that displays "save file corrupted" at startup, an internal clock that starts again from zero, settings that no longer stick from one session to the next: these three symptoms almost always point to the same part, a 3 V coin cell fitted twenty or thirty years ago. It has done its job far longer than intended. It can be replaced for a few euros, and the machine gets its memory back.
The right format, not the right brand
CR1616, CR1620, CR1632: the three middle digits give the diameter, the last two the thickness in tenths of a millimetre. A CR1632 is twice as thick as a CR1616 and will not fit in the same slot. That is why we sell all three formats on the same listing: the only thing to do before ordering is to read the reference engraved on the battery you remove.
What to plan for before ordering
A cartridge battery is not a remote-control battery: it is soldered in by two metal tabs. These batteries come bare, without tabs. So have a fine-tip soldering iron ready, or a battery holder to fit once and for all so that the next replacement can be done without tools. We tell you this before you buy rather than when you send it back: without soldering, the job cannot be done on a cartridge.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔋 Which format should I order?
The one printed on the battery you remove: CR1616, CR1620 or CR1632. All three are 3 V but they have neither the same diameter nor the same thickness, so they are not interchangeable.
🎮 Is this the right battery for a cartridge that no longer saves?
The CR1616 is the most common format in battery-backed Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Open the cartridge and read the reference before ordering.
🔧 Do I need to solder?
Yes, in most cases: a cartridge's original battery is held in place by two soldered tabs. These batteries are bare, without tabs. You need to reuse the existing tabs or fit a battery holder.
💾 Will I lose my save?
Yes. Cutting power to the SRAM erases the game stored in memory. Transfer it or accept the loss before you start.
📦 What's in the box?
5 or 10 lithium coin cells (3 V) depending on the chosen variant, in the selected format. No tools, no battery holder, no tabs.
♻️ Are they rechargeable?
No. These are primary lithium batteries, for single use. Never attempt to recharge them. At the end of their life, take them to a collection point.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days.
🛡️ Which guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns.
Why buy here rather than on a marketplace
It is a fair question. Here is the answer, straight.
Every listing is checked before publication: real compatibility, material, dimensions, box contents. Many models never make it into the catalogue.
A question about compatibility, a fit problem, a return: you write, a human replies within 1 business day. In French.
The 2-year legal warranty of conformity is handled by us — not by a form on the other side of the world. And 14 days to change your mind, with no need to justify yourself.
We do not claim to be the cheapest. We claim that you will know exactly what you are buying before you pay.
