Desoldering braid: remove solder without tearing the trace
On a retro motherboard, the tricky part isn't soldering, it's removing the solder already in place — replacing a swollen capacitor, taking off a cartridge connector, redoing a failed joint. The desoldering pump clears the bulk, the braid picks up the rest. This 1.5 m roll of pre-fluxed braided copper soaks up molten solder by capillary action and leaves a clean pad, ready to be resoldered.
What it does
- Cleans a pad down to the copper: the braid draws up molten solder, including from a plated through-hole the pump didn't clear.
- Seven widths from 1 to 4 mm: 1 to 1.5 mm for SMD leads and fine ribbon cables, 2 to 2.5 mm for through-hole components, 3 to 4 mm for ground areas and large connectors.
- Built-in flux: the flux in the braid makes the solder wet immediately, with no need to add more on each pass.
- 1.5 m roll: braid gets used up quickly, as you cut off the saturated section after each use. Packs of 5 to 200 rolls are available for workshops doing repair after repair.
What it doesn't do
- It doesn't replace a temperature-controlled soldering iron: the braid heats nothing, it absorbs. Without an iron able to hold 300 to 350 °C on a ground area, it won't take up the solder.
- It won't desolder a component on its own: it cleans pads, but it won't free a multi-pin connector without hot air or a pump.
- It doesn't forgive overheating: leaving the iron too long on a pad of a thin retro board lifts the trace. That's the classic failure — the risk comes from the technique, not the braid.
- A section already saturated with solder absorbs nothing more: it gets cut off and thrown away. Get plenty.
- The built-in flux leaves a residue: you need to clean with isopropyl alcohol after the job, the braid doesn't do it.
Compatibility
Generic electronics tool: handheld and home console motherboards, controllers, screen ribbon cables, cartridge connectors, power boards. There's no machine-specific compatibility — the braid suits any standard tin-lead or lead-free solder joint. The only choice that matters is the width, chosen according to the size of the solder joint: too wide, it draws away heat and won't wet; too narrow, it saturates in one pass. Flux melting point stated by the manufacturer at around 183 °C. The exact flux composition isn't documented by the supplier: to be confirmed if you work in a controlled atmosphere.
Skill level required
Beginner with guidance. No cutting and no shell disassembly related to the braid itself, but you need to know how to hold a soldering iron. You'll need: a fine-tip iron with adjustable temperature, liquid flux if your joints are old and oxidised, side cutters to remove the used section, and isopropyl alcohol to clean up afterwards. Always work on a board that is switched off and discharged.

The technique: clearing a pad before resoldering
A leaking capacitor on a 90s console board, a worn cartridge connector, a screen ribbon cable to redo: in every case, half the work is removing the old solder. The desoldering pump clears the volume, the braid picks up the film left at the bottom of the plated through-hole. You lay the braid on the pad, the iron on top, and the solder rises by capillary action. The pad is clean again, and the new joint holds.
Width, the only choice that matters
A braid that's too wide draws heat away from the iron and won't wet; too narrow, it saturates on the first pass. The 1 and 1.5 mm widths cover SMD leads and fine ribbon cables. From 2 to 2.5 mm, you're in the all-round format for through-hole components. From 3 to 4 mm, it's for ground planes and large connectors, where there's a lot of solder to clear at once.
A consumable: get plenty
This is the limitation to know before buying: braid is a consumable, not a tool. Each saturated section is cut off and thrown away, and a full motherboard recap can use several tens of centimetres. A 1.5 m roll is enough for a one-off repair; beyond that, packs of 5, 10 or 20 rolls stop you running out in the middle of a job. Listing verified on 19 August 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
🔧 Do you need to solder to use this braid?
Yes. The braid only works under the heat of a soldering iron: it absorbs molten solder, it doesn't heat it. Use a fine-tip iron with adjustable temperature, around 300 to 350 °C depending on the joint.
🎮 Which consoles is it compatible with?
All of them. It's a generic electronics tool: handheld and home console motherboards, controllers, screen ribbon cables, power boards. There are no restrictions by machine or revision.
📏 Which width should you choose?
1 to 1.5 mm for SMD leads and fine ribbon cables, 2 to 2.5 mm for through-hole components, 3 to 4 mm for ground planes and large connectors. Too wide, the braid draws away heat; too narrow, it saturates in one pass.
🧪 Do you need to add flux?
Not in principle: the braid is pre-fluxed. On an old, oxidised joint, a dab of liquid flux makes the rework much easier. Clean off the residue with isopropyl alcohol after the job.
📦 What's in the box?
The roll or rolls of copper desoldering braid, 1.5 m per roll, in the width and quantity chosen in the variant. No soldering iron, liquid flux or tools are supplied.
🧰 How much braid should you plan for?
It's a consumable: each saturated section is cut off and thrown away. A 1.5 m roll covers a one-off repair. For a full motherboard recap or regular workshop use, go for a pack of 5 to 20 rolls.
🚚 What are the delivery times?
Delivery in 10 to 18 days, ships within 3 to 5 days. Replies to your questions within 1 business day.
🛡️ Which guarantee applies?
2-year legal guarantee of conformity. 14-day returns from receipt, product unused.
