BlueRetro adapter for PS1 and PS2: a modern Bluetooth controller on the original console
Original wired controllers wear out, and their cable forces you to play right up against the TV. This BlueRetro adapter by RetroScaler plugs in place of the wired controller on a PS1 or a PS2 and receives a modern Bluetooth controller: PS4 or PS5 controller, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, Xbox One S or 8BitDo.
What it does
- BlueRetro firmware: free (open source) firmware on an ESP32 chip, which recognises a wide list of Bluetooth controllers and keeps evolving.
- Update via USB: the adapter's USB port is used to install new firmware versions.
- Button remapping: button assignment is set from the BlueRetro web interface, in a browser that supports Web Bluetooth.
- No work on the console: the adapter plugs into the controller port, without disassembly or soldering.
What it doesn't do
- It only handles Bluetooth controllers: a controller that uses a 2.4 GHz USB dongle, or a first-generation Xbox One controller without Bluetooth, will not connect.
- Bluetooth adds latency: low, but higher than that of a wired controller.
- A modern controller does not have the layout of an original controller: some games benefit from button remapping.
- It does not replace a light gun, a steering wheel or a dance mat.
- It does not plug into a PS3 or a more recent console, whose controllers connect via USB.
Compatibility
Consoles: PlayStation (PS1), PS one and PlayStation 2, fat and slim models, which share the same controller port. Controllers: Bluetooth models of PS4, PS5, Switch Pro, Joy-Con, Xbox One S and 8BitDo in Bluetooth mode. Not covered: PS3 and later consoles, wireless controllers with a USB receiver, and accessories that are not controllers (light gun, wheel, mat).

The job: plug in, pair, play
You remove the wired controller, plug the adapter in its place and put the Bluetooth controller in pairing mode. The console sees no difference: it receives the commands as if from an original controller. You play from the sofa, without a cable stretched across the living room, with a modern controller whose sticks do not drift.
The part: BlueRetro, a free firmware
BlueRetro is open source firmware that runs on an ESP32 chip. RetroScaler builds it into a housing with a PlayStation connector. The benefit lies in the community: the recognised controllers and settings grow with each version, which you install yourself through the adapter's USB port.
