5x LED magnifier lamp: see the trace before you put the iron down
Reattaching an IPS screen ribbon cable, touching up a torn trace on a motherboard, finding the polarity of a capacitor: to the naked eye, you guess more than you see. This desk lamp combines a 5x magnifier and LED lighting with 3 colour temperatures to light up the work area without casting shadows and keep both hands free.
What it does
- 5x magnification: pads, component legs and micro-solder joints become readable without pressing your nose against the board.
- LED lighting with 3 colour temperatures: cool, neutral or warm light depending on what you are trying to make out — a different contrast often reveals a cold joint.
- Hands-free: the lamp sits on the workbench and stays in place, unlike a magnifier you have to hold while handling the iron.
What it doesn't do
- It is not a BGA rework microscope: at 5x, you work on through-hole components and standard-size SMD parts, not reballing.
- The lens is plastic, not optical glass: it scratches if you clean it dry or with an abrasive cloth.
- No soldering tools are supplied — no iron, no solder, no desoldering braid.
- It is not extra lighting for the whole room: the beam is focused on the area under the magnifier.
Compatibility

The job: stop soldering blind
On a Game Boy Advance or PlayStation 1 board, the gap between two pads is measured in fractions of a millimetre. With the naked eye and under a ceiling light, you put the iron where you think the trace is. The 5x magnifier brings the area up to the right size and the LED lighting lifts it out of the shadow of your own hands. The result shows mostly afterwards: fewer solder bridges to fix.
Three colour temperatures, three ways to spot a fault
A cold joint isn't visible under every light. In cool white, shiny solder stands out and gaps jump out at you. In a warm tone, you can better make out the solder mask and flux residue. Switching from one tone to another is like changing the angle without moving the board, and that's often what reveals the fault you've been looking for for ten minutes.
What it doesn't replace
Best to say it before you buy: 5x is the right magnification for through-hole and standard SMD work, not for BGA reballing — for that, you need a proper stereo microscope. The lens is plastic, so clean it damp and without an abrasive cloth. And no soldering tools are supplied: this lamp complements an already equipped workstation, it does not make one.
